Still Curious, Just Less Quiet: Meet Eloise

What does a teenager fascinated by the human brain, a racehorse owner, and a Business Development Manager have in common?

Quite a lot, as it turns out.

At FLG, curiosity isn’t just welcomed, it’s what half the team got hired for. Eloise is a good example of where that can take you.

Eloise’s career hasn’t followed the route she once imagined. Growing up, she wanted to become a psychologist. Today, she spends her time meeting businesses, asking questions, and understanding what makes them tick.

We caught up with Eloise to talk about her unexpected route into sales and her growing confidence at FLG. We also found out why you’re far more likely to find her at a racecourse than on a night out.

How did you go from psychology to sales?

It definitely wasn’t planned. I’ve always been fascinated by the brain and why people think and behave the way they do.  I studied psychology, genuinely thinking that was the direction my career would take.

Instead, I started working as a wedding and events planner, which taught me a lot about working with people. You have to listen, stay calm when things don’t go to plan, and find solutions quickly.

My mum works for ClearCourse and introduced me to an opportunity with one of FLG’s sister companies. I joined as an Account Manager in May 2022, moved to FLG, and four years later, I’m a Business Development Manager. I never really decided I wanted a career in sales.  I just found a role that suited what I’d always enjoyed doing: talking to people, asking questions, and figuring things out.

With sales running in the family, did it always feel like a natural career choice?

Probably more than I realised. My dad is a Sales Compliance Manager, and my mum previously worked in sales, but despite that, I never really imagined myself doing the same.

Even now, I don’t think of my role as simply selling software. I enjoy understanding how businesses work, what frustrates their teams, and where opportunities might be getting missed. Every business is different, so I like working out whether FLG can genuinely help. That’s what motivates me: listening to someone’s challenges and finding a solution that could make their working life easier.

Has confidence always come naturally to you?

Definitely not. I was very shy growing up. I moved schools when I was young and tended to keep myself to myself, so I don’t think anyone who knew me then would have expected me to end up in a role where I spend so much time meeting new people, presenting and running demos.

FLG has played a huge part in bringing me out of my shell. Over time, I’ve realised that confidence comes from doing things that once made you uncomfortable and proving to yourself that you can do them. When I compare myself now to the person who first joined in 2022, the difference is huge, and it’s something I’m really proud of.

What are you proudest of during your time at FLG?

Being able to have an impact beyond my day-to-day role. Speaking to customers and prospects means I hear first-hand about how businesses operate, what’s working, and what people would like to see done differently. I’ve always been vocal about taking those conversations back into FLG.

If I hear the same challenge repeatedly, or someone shares an idea that could improve the product or customer experience, I want to make sure that conversation doesn’t end when the meeting does. Representing the people I speak to, and knowing it actually shapes how FLG develops, is something I find really rewarding.

Away from work, where are we most likely to find you?

Probably at a racecourse. Horse racing is my biggest interest outside of work. I have shares in a few racehorses, so I go to as many meetings as I can.  I love travelling around the country visiting different courses and stables, following form and results, and soaking up the atmosphere on race day. I’m also a big Formula 1 fan, so apparently, there’s a bit of a theme when it comes to the sports I enjoy.

Outside of that, I’m actually a massive homebody. I’ve never really been interested in nightlife; give me a quiet night at home, a good book, and an early night, and I’m perfectly happy.

Is there anything that has particularly shaped who you are today?

The Chimp Paradox. My dad gave me the book when I was 13, and it genuinely changed the way I thought about myself and other people, teaching me about self-awareness, managing emotions, and understanding my own reactions in a way that’s influenced my morals, my emotional awareness, and how I approach situations.

My interest in psychology has never disappeared either. I still read a lot about the brain, psychology, and personal development, and I’m fascinated by the fact that you can spend your entire life with your own brain and still have so much to learn about how it works.

What’s next?

I want to keep developing, both professionally and personally. I don’t have a perfectly mapped-out five-year plan, but I want to keep challenging myself, becoming better at what I do, and learning from the people and businesses I work with.

I’m naturally curious, and I don’t think that’s going anywhere. There will always be another book I want to read, another question I want to ask, another racecourse I want to visit, and something new I want to understand, and I quite like it that way.

Looking ahead…

For Eloise, the most exciting part is knowing there’s still plenty more to learn and contribute at FLG. Having seen first-hand how conversations with customers and prospects can influence the way FLG grows, she’s looking forward to continuing to bring those voices into the business, take on new challenges, and see where her role takes her next.

One thing’s certain: she’ll keep asking questions, sharing ideas, and pushing herself along the way.
